The Giro D’Italia consists of 21 – or sometimes 20 – different stages which make up one entire, gruelling route through Italy’s stunning scenery. Taking in towns, cities, countryside꧅, mountains and sometimes the coast, the race tests its riders in all manner of conditions. The race also include a time trial under five miles, as well as two or three rest days intended f꧒or the riders to recover.

The race has three different types of stages: mass-start stages, individual time trials, and team time trials. On 14 occasions, the race has started in foreign lands with Monaco, Belgium, Greece, France, Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom (Northern Ireland), Israel, and now Hungary all hosting the Grande Partenza, as well as microstღates situated within Italian borders, such as San Marino and the Vatican City.

The 2022 Giro d’Italia will mark the 105th edition of the event, with the Grande Partenza set to be hosted in Budapest. The race begins on Friday 6th of May, while the final stage will be an individual time trial on the Torricelle Circuit, which will take place on Sunday the 29th of May.

The tour will spend three days in Hungary before heading south to 𝄹Sicily, and then travel north to Verona for the final str🍃etch. In total, there are 21 stages spread over 23 days.

Two riders to look out for include Richard Carapaz and Tom Dumoulin, who each have a victory under their belts in 2019 and 2017 respectively. Another top contender at this year’s Giro is Simon Yates, who is looking for his second Grand Tour title after winning the Vuelta a España back in 2🅷018.

Besides these veterans, be sure to keep an eye on top contenders and respective leaders of their teams, João Almeida, Pello Bilbao and Miguel Ángel López. With at least six top candidates in line for this year’s fi🌃nal pink jersey, there's plenty of excit🦄ement in store for punters and cycling fans alike!

The bookies seem to favour Simon Yates, João Almeida and Richard Carapaz, with Carapaz being a less than 2/1 favourite. With that said, we see plenty of value in Dumoulin, and we cannot neglect underdogs João Almeida, Pello Bilbao and Miguel Ángel López either, with huge value at odds of 9 to 16.

Our Giro d’Italia Betting Advice for 2022:

While we cannot disagree with the bookies that Carapaz is the favourite, 11/8 or 7/5 is a very small return on investment, with a very high risk, especially with Yates, Almeida and Dumoulin and several newcomers hot on his heels. He might even be a bit overvalued. If you plan to bet on Carapaz, we recommend hedging your bets through a few of 💙the most promising underdogs as insurance.

Fortunately, many of the same betting strategies that apply to horse racing and Formula 1 also apply to cycling. Here are our to🤡p five tips for betting🅠 on the race:

1. Don’t Only Bet on Stage or Overall Win

While the above i🍎s one of the most popular bets, a top 3🌟 finish might be a safer bet, especially if there is a heavy favourite to win.

2. Look for Value!

It is easy to simply follow the bookies and bet on the favourite. However, you won't be the only one doing so. This puts pressure on the odds, sometimes causing them to drop so that they will no longer reflect the probable outcome. We recommend looking for bets with the best value.

3. Take Advantage of Betting Promotions

On the hunt for the best Giro d'Italia betting promotions? If not, you should be! New customers can take advantage of welcome offers such as deposit bonuses or similar. Not only can these boost your bankroll, but they're also a great way to increase your potential winnings on whatever you choo𝔉se to bet on.

4. Hedge Your Bets

There is no reason to bet on only one ‘horse in the race’. As there are hundreds of riders and at least several contenders for each stage of the race, you can easily bet on several of the top riders – if one of them wins, you will still turn a profit (see our article on dutching).

5. Bet Live

Live betting is perfectly suited to cycling betting. Since a race lasts several hours, you have ♌plenty of time to decide who you think will win, b💎ased on how the race develops.

As we previously mentioned, best promotions, free bets and risk-free bets are the best way to get sไtarted. Here are just a few of the best offers you can claim this cycling season:

There are numerous bet types available at many online bookmakers with diverse odds. These will undoubtedly be a suitable option for the Giro d'Italia – below, we take a look at the most popular ones.

Outright Winner

This is the most straightforward betting market – all you need to do is predict which cyclist will win the entire tour and finish first.

Best betting site for Outright Winner: Betfair

Stage Winner

The 21 stages at the Giro d’Italia serve up the same number of bets for each stage, each of which help break down the entire race. However, while you can pick a cyclist to win each stage, bear in mind that your selection(s) are not guaranteed to finish in first position by the end of🐼 the 21st stage.

This can also be considered a similar bet to a type of golf bet that allows you to wager on which player will be top of the lead🅰erboard after each day of tournament play.

Best betting site for Individual Stage Winner: SportNation

Betting on Nationality

Betting on the winner's nationality is another top betting market for cycling. Here, you try to predict the nationality of the eventual Giro d’Italia winner, whether a local Italian, Spanish, British, or Frenꦆch rider. As you mig🍌ht expect, Italian cyclists have won more Giros than any other nation, with 41 champion riders overall.

Best betting site for Winner Nationality: Betfair

Top Three – Top Ten

The top three – top ten market is pretty similar to the each-way bet used in other sports, such as horse racing. For this market, you need to bet on a cyclist to end up in the top three or ten finishers in either a stage or the entire race.

Best betting site for nominated places: Betfred

Head-to-Head

Sometimes referred to as matched bets, head-to-head bets on the Giro d’Italia pit one cyclist against another to ꦓsee who fi🦩nishes better off in a stage or the entire race.

Best betting site for head-to-head betting: 888sport

Points Winner

The Points Winner bet is a stake on who manages to accumulate the most points in intermediate sprints and stage finishes. While these races are not really for sprint cyclists, who stand no chance of winning overall, sprinting itᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚself is a necessary feature of the tour.

Best betting site for Points Winner: bwin

The Giro d’Italia forms part of one of the three Grand Tours of cycling, with the other two being the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. The race takes place predominantly in Italy, but has frequently visited other nations. The race itself dates back to 1909 and was designed to drive up the sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Since 1909, the Giro d’Italia has been held annually and lengthened as its popularity increased. Notable winners include Italian Luigi Ganna, who won the inaugural race, as well as Hugo Koblet, the first non-Italian to claim victory in 1950. The Italians continued to dominate the race for most of the next 20 years until it was won by Belgian Eddy Merckx in 1968, who, one year later, ꦏwas disqualified for failing a drug test.

In recent years, overseas riders have fared better with Ireland, Spain, Russia, and United Kingdom all producing winners. The first foreign Grande Partenza for the race came in 1965 when the riders set off 🌼in San Marino. Since then, Greece, France, and Israel have all hosted, while the racers have started out in Holland three times. Hungary had been due to host the start in 2020, buꦏt this plan was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, in 2022, the Giro is starting in Budapest for the first time.
